U1 The Urban Nomad
For my first project, I was given the brief of making a paper garment around the brief of the urban nomad. To put this simply this is fashions take on the nomad (a traveler). For example think of a gypsy or a native American indian.
This style is layered with bold contrasting prints with lots of wool and leather creating a contrast of texture.
This look is currently dominating the fashions scene.
The brief stated that the garment that I was to create, was based around an area that was meaningful to me, for this I chose a village in Cornwall, England, and had a lot of drawing and printing, and to be constructed from paper.
One more thing, it had to be wearable in case it was selected for the collages January fashion show, which it was, my dress actually opened the show and there was quite a lot of gasps as it went down the cat walk, (I'm taking this as a good thing)
luckily all of my hard work paid off as i got a distinction

U2 Nomad fashion
For my second project i, i was given the brief of recycling a shirt to make a garment, continuing with the theme from my first project (urban nomad paper dress: http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/urban-nomad-paper-dress)
I had to carry out research of a nomadic group of people, for which I chose the bedouins who live in north Africa. Looking at the clothes and prints that they wear together with their jewelry and tattoos, to create the prints to go onto my garment. Over all I got a distinction for this project. :)

U3&4 Fun at the Fair
For my 3rd project I was given the brief of creating a colection of: four greating cards, a gift bag and wrapping paper around the theme of "fun at the fair" which counted for two units of my course (meaning i will get two grades for this project). Unfortunately I don't have close up images of all my work, although this project is not fabric based it helped to develop my surface pattern design skills for repeat and placement pattern.
I also had to think of an occasion to target my collection to, for which I chose congratulations, and then research accordingly. As I am also highly influenced by all things vintage, I gave my work a vintage feel.

U6 1950's Embroidery
For my 4th project I was given the brief of creating a collection of: four A5 sized embroidery samples, and an illustration of what one of these samples could become. These all needed to be around the theme of the 1950’s. (I actually finished this project over a month ago but am only just getting around to up loading it.) For this project, I had to carry out research on the common prints and textiles which were popular in the 1950’s. As well as looking at the significant changes to the design world which came about during this era. From this research I found that instead of flower heads the plant structure was increasingly popular as was all things to do with the space movement. Looking at 1950’s print designers, helped me to develop my own ideas and create my own samples.
a lot of time and effort went in to creating these embroidery samples, which paid off as I got a distinction for the project.

U7 Decorative lighting
For my 6th project I was given the brief of creating a lighting installation which portrays a specific emotion which would be reinforced by my choice of colour pallet and the way in which the light is diffused. It also had to be inspired by the works of either: Wassily Kandinsky, Frank Stella,or, Howard Hodgkin. As I was greatly inspired by Kandinskys “the singer” and the “fair well” I chose to portray a moody atmospheric sense of emotion.
The brief also stated that the lighting installation should be for an exhibition, because of this I intended my light to be quite ‘out there’ with it's haphazard shape plus the little amount of light that it produced.
I am pleased with how the light has turned out and also received a distinction for this unit.

U8 At The Sea Side
For my 7th project I was given the brief of designing a fashion accessory around the theme “at the sea side”. My accessory was to be made from felt which I had to make myself, I was also limited to only using two colours. Being as I didn’t particularly like the colours that the college had in stock I ordered my own wool off the internet (typically I ordered too much). I used two shades of blue which I blended, as well as white which I dyed using tea. I was greatly inspired by vintage postcards and photos which helped me to determine my colour pallet. For the structure of my fascinator i was inspired by shells and for the vail I took inspiration from a fishing net. Overall I am really pleased with the way in which this has turned out.
